BIOGRAPHY

Performer, choreographer, and teacher Carly Liegel grew up training at the Kehl School of Dance in Madison, Wisconsin; it was there she discovered the power of her voice through movement and performance.

She graduated with her BFA in Dance and minor in Exercise Science in the Spring of 2021 from Indiana University-Bloomington. At IU, she performed works choreographed by Juel D. Lane and Beatrice Capote (both of Camille A. Brown & Dancers), Erik Abbott-Main (of Sleep No More), Elizabeth Shea, Selene Carter, and Twyla Tharp. She also choreographed a handful of mainstage and student-lead dance and theater shows including Sondheim's Into the Woods, Mary Zimmerman's Metamorphoses, Kaela Mei-Shing Garvin's Tiger Beat, and Green Day's American Idiot.

Upon graduation, Carly moved to Chicago to see what the city had to offer her. She completed two seasons with Alluvion Dance Chicago as a company member, performing works by Jessica Miller Tomlinson, Alyssa Simpson, and Tessa Ritchey. She's also performed for Darvin Dances, Hot Crowd, and other freelance artists.

Since living in Chicago, Carly's choreography has been showcased in the Detroit Dance City Festival, Inaside's Choreography Competition, Alluvion Dance Chicago’s Emergence  and Arrive festivals, and most recently Trifecta's A New Light. Liegel has produced, directed, and choreographed two evening-length shows in the city.

The first was RAMBLE, a multi-disciplinary dance theater performance set to the music of Led Zeppelin. Ramble was built of a robust cast of 14 performers and spanned the dance genres of jazz, improvisation, contemporary, and tap. What began as an unfinished college project in the spring of 2020 turned into a successful, almost sold-out, three-night run at Links Hall in July of 2023 thanks to the dedicated artists of Chicago and Liegel's artistic partner on the project and fellow IU alumnus, Megan Kudla.

In August of 2024, Liegel was accepted as the first artist to present as part of Dovetail Studios 16x2 Performance Series alongside Faith Hagerty, fellow IU Alumnus turned Chicago artist. Both Liegel and Hagerty restaged works and came together to present Shed Light on the Subject, a night to reimagine how both performers and audience members engage with dance.

Amongst performance and choreography, Carly's other passion lies with teaching. Carly has been a part of the Joffrey Ballet family in both the Academy and Community Engagement Departments since 2021. Carly currently heads the Bridge Program, bringing students in grade K-2 in Chicago Public Schools access to dance and opportunities for merti scholarships, and the Dancing with Parkinson's program, bringing joy and stability through art and movement to people with Parkinson's. Carly also teaches yoga and adult dance classes across studios in the city.

Carly is a certified member of Dance Master’s of Wisconsin (DMW), Chicago National Association of Dance Master’s (CNADM), and the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO).

STATEMENT

"I have a hard time deciding where my passions lie: in teaching, in performing, in choreographing. I realize my best, most

I share with others by dancing.

I learn from others through teaching.

I undestand with others by choreographing.
